Flow visualization experiment is designed to demonstrate the different forms of turbulence in a flowing stream of liquid through a smooth bore tube.
The teaching apparatus replicates the experiments performed by Osborne Reynolds in 1883. The experiment involves a water stream being passed through a glass tube at a controlled rate. Three different diameter glass tubes are provided. Initially the flow of water is kept to a minimal. Once a stable flow rate has been achieved, dye, which has been previously pre-mixed with water, is allowed to enter the centre of the flowing stream of water. The students will be required to record the flow and to prepare a sketch of the dye flowing through the water.
